Jurgis Karnavičius (Lithuania) was born in Vilnius, into a well-known family of musicians. In 1980 he graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre as a piano soloist, having studied the specialty with prof. Jurgis Karnavičius, his father. In 1980–1983 he further improved his professional skills at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow with prof. Lev Naumov. In 1978 Jurgis Karnavičius was awarded the first prize at the International M. K. Čiurlionis Piano Competition in Vilnius (Lithuania). He was also awarded honour diplomas at Robert Schumann Piano Competition in Zwickau (Germany, 1981) and Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna (Austria, 1989). In 1990 the pianist won first prize at the Young Keyboard Artists Association Competition in Oberlin (USA), in 1991 – fourth prize in the Mavi Marcoz Piano Competition in Saint Vincent (Italy). Jurgis Karnavičius performs solo and with different orchestras, and is also the permanent concert partner of his wife, leading Lithuanian opera singer Sigutė Stonytė. In recent years he has been actively collaborating with several chamber ensembles as well as with the contemporary music ensemble "Gaida". The pianist’s repertory ranges from Haydn to Messiaen, with the particular emphasis on the piano works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms and French composers. J. Karnavičius has given concerts in many European countries, the USA, Canada and South Korea. In addition to his active performing career, Jurgis Karnavičius is a professor at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius. He is often giving masterclasses in Lithuania and abroad, as well as participating in various international competitions as a jury member.
